Lovebird Paintings - 'For the Birds'

I have done a few paintings over this past year and I wanted to share two. The theme with these two was obviously lovebirds. I created my first painting over the summer last year and I decided to enter it in the educators art show at the Crossroads Art Center.

For the Birds #1, Acrylic on Canvas

It turned out that the painting was sold and the buyers liked it so much they commissioned another piece! They wanted it to be a sister painting to match the first, so I kept the color scheme similar and the same lovebird subjects, but I experimented a lot more with the pose and details in the lovebirds.

For the Birds # 2, Acrylic on Canvas
I really wanted to play with the pose to create some echoing hearts as hidden characteristics. The first heart I made in the negative space under the beaks. Other hearts can be found too; the beaks form a suggestion of a heart and the bodies of the birds create a heart, as well. It was a fun challenge, having to balance making the hearts readable and keeping the bodies of the lovebirds more realistic.

I took some process photos of the lovebirds to show the steps I took while painting and show a closer look at some details.

Anime and Manga Drawing Classes at Chesterfield Libraries

Since January 2013, I have been teaching some Anime and Manga drawing workshops with Chesterfield County Public Libraries. The classes were offered occasionally throughout the year on Saturdays as part of the Libraries' Teen Studio Program. The library and I provided all materials to students for the program.

These classes have also led to other opportunities like teaching at the Chesterfield Library Comic Con Events and being a guest artist/teacher at Meadowbrook High School's Anime Club.

So far, I have taught 4 installments of the Classes covering different aspects of the topic.

The first class was Introduction to Manga and Anime. This class mainly covered how to draw faces, and figures in the Anime style. I also covered drawing facial expressions, mouths, hands, feet, clothes, and hair. Students used the information and techniques I taught them to draw their own Anime/Manga character. I taught students how to transfer drawings using carbon paper and how to finalize characters through inking. I provided various inking materials and techniques for them to experiment with including India ink, brushes, brush pens, multi-liner/micron pens, etc. I also taught a short version of this lesson at the 2013 Chesterfield Comic Con Event, which covered how to draw the face in the Anime style.

The second set of classes explored Character Design. I taught students how to use a matrix/chart to get unlimited ideas for characters, personalities, costumes, and environments. The matrix technique was from a book called The Manga Matrix by Hiroyoshi Tsukamoto. (This book is an absolutely awesome reference to have! I brought a copy to class so everyone could take a look at it.) In addition to the matrix, I reviewed how to draw the face and figure, taught how to draw unique characters from a basic shapes, body proportions for realistic vs unrealistic style characters, character variation, using a silhouette to check the strength of a character design, and inking.

The third installment of the classes dealt with How to Make a Manga. First, I quickly reviewed how to draw a face, the figure, and character design. The main topics covered on making a manga included layout, panels, speech/word bubbles, font, sound and line effects, black and white vs. color in manga, planning and process of making a manga, publishing/sharing a manga, and inking. I had two exercises built into the lesson for students to try their hand at story telling, paneling, and speech bubbles.

My most recent class discusses How to Draw Chibi Anime and Manga Characters. In this lesson, I discuss what a chibi is, the characteristics of chibi's, body proportions, chibi characters vs regular anime characters, and how to draw a chibi. For drawing chibi's, I covered the face, eyes, bodies, mouths, facial expressions, hands, feet, clothes and hair. I taught this lesson at Meadowbrook High School recently and I will also be teaching it at this year's Chesterfield Comic Con Event on March 22nd from about 10:30-11:30.

These classes are so much fun! The students really seem to love them. We often talk about the anime they lik and even play some clips and songs from their favorite shows at the end of class. I love getting to see their drawings, they are really talented artists!

Art Facebook Site Live and New Art Updates!

I have new Art Facebook Page live now, visit and Like!  http://www.facebook.com/pages/Kelly-Nixon-Art/284621634972724

Time for another art update! Here are some of my ceramics and jewelry work.

Cylinder Containers
This is a set of nesting cylinder containers. I used hammering techniques to make a bubble-like design on the sides.

Shell Ring
Copper and brass ring with silver band. The top of the ring is made with two seashells that are striped with brass and copper. The shells encase a copper pearl. The inner band is made with silver.

This ring is so big it could probably be used like brass knuckles!

Silent Sentinel
Copper silhouette of a cheetah with liver of sulfur for color variation. This piece is made with two sheets of copper that were hammered to get different textures and later space-riveted together to create depth. The original piece is 1in x 2in.
Flaming Leap
Copper broach with Liver of Sulfer and Blue Patina used for color variations. This piece was space riveted, so there is a little bit of space between each layer, which creates a more 3D effect.

Wary Perch
Hand-built ceramic vessel. The shape and colors were inspired by Greek urns and vessels. Decorated with an animal narrative: Two wolves are tracking a snow leopard through a rocky-mountain area. The leopard watches their approach from higher ground.

This piece is about 15in. tall and 28in. around at its widest point.
Now the only question is what to put in this beast?!
Worn Soul
Hand-built ceramic cowboy boot. Stained for color variation. This piece was modeled from direct observation of a real boot down to the seam and rip details.

This piece is the actual size of an average cowboy boot, but much heaver!

Blue Tide
 Wheel-thrown ceramic bowl.

Fun glaze fact: A little white and black glaze + kiln firing = speckled blue. Go figure.

Red Tide
Wheel-thrown ceramic bowl. The coloring is the effect of white glaze mixing with the red during firing. It reminds me of waves washing in on the beach. I really love the surprise blends different glazes can give you from firing!

Rippling Mug
Wheel-thrown ceramic mug with a hand-built handle. Decorated with a wavy design and nice mixing of white and black glazes to create blue.

Red Rimmed Onyx
Wheel-thrown bowl. Black glaze with a red rim.

Burgundy Mug
Wheel-thrown mug with hand-built handle. Colors are a great blend of red and white glazes.

Red Speckled Bowl
Wavy-sided bowl made using wheel-throwing. Great speckling colors made using red and white glazes.

Twin Spouted Bowl
Double spouted bowl. Blue made with the blending of white and black glazes during firing. This bowl could easily be a sugar or spice dish. The spouts double for pouring contents or resting spoons.

That is all for now! More to follow soon. I will be adding some pumpkin carvings before Halloween, be looking for them!

James Jean Presentation

For my Art Ed. class we have to give a presentation on a contemporary artist. For mine. I chose the painter/illustrator James Jean. I really love his work. His color choices, surrealist subjects, attention to detail and overall style really grab the eye and command attention. Jean has a totally unique way of approaching his subject matter and I find his work really inspiring. His website is www.jamesjean.com and his blog is www.processrecess.com. His blog is really great; Jean posts the stages of his art from thumbnail to final piece. It also goes back several years into his portfolio.

Well anyway here is the layout I made as a guide for my presentation board. The board is one of those that has three panels and stands up on its own. I also made a design for the back of the board, but I won't be using it because of the cost of printing the images large enough to fit the board.

This is the front of the display board that I will be using.

This is the design for the back that I won't be able to use. I thought it looked pretty cool though.

That's all for now

LOOOONG Overdue Update

This update has been long in coming. I'm adding pretty much all the finished illustrations I did during this past Spring that I already had digital files for. All of them are a mix of traditional, photoshop, and illustrator techniques. Anything I forget or have to photograph will be added later.
Also I will be trying to post updates daily now, but they all won't strictly be art updates. With out further adieu here is my art dump, enjoy!! :)

Editorial Illustration from February about how Obama has to deal with a lot of national security changes that Cheney made, while in office, and whether or not he should get rid of them, or keep them as is.

Ed. Illustration also from Feb. that draws comparisons between the inaugurations of President
Obama and President Roosevelt (FDR not Teddy).

-I know I need to work on the likeness in these illustrations, but they were my first attempt
at drawing a celebrity, oh well live and learn. :)

Ed. Illustration about Chinese search engine, Baidu, which is the largest search engine in China (their logo is the dog paw print by the way). Baidu has been basically killing the traffic to sites that refuse to buy ads from them, which effectively kills those businesses in the process.

Ed. illustration that discusses human evolution and its roots in Africa.

Illustration of Aesop's The Old Lion. In the fable, the lion is too old to hunt so he feigns illness to trick passing animals to come into the cave to help him. When they come in, he eats them. One day, a fox passes by and calls out to the lion. The lion asks why the fox won't come closer and the fox says that he has noticed that all of the animal tracks lead into the cave, but none come back out.

-I've always wondered how the next scene would play out, would there be an awkward silence or a sudden chase?

Illustration of Aesop's The Wolf and the Crane. As the story goes, the wolf gets a bone caught in his throat and promises the crane a reward, if he will use his long beak to get it out. The crane does so and the wolf starts to leave. The crane asks for his reward and the wolf tells him that being able to stick his head in a wolf's mouth and live to tell the tale is reward enough.

-I've come to realize Aesop's fables are all kind of violent. I didn't really remember them being that way when I was little, go figure.

That's all for now, check back tomorrow for more!
